was designed to do this kind of thing, and supports setting flags (read,
replied, forwarded etc) and folders, subfolders etc, which POP3 doesn't.

Well, if you call making a menu selection a "horrible hack" :-)

POP with "leave message on server" works perfectly well for a single
user with multiple computers.
