You can, but... it's a hack. IMAP was designed for that
kind of thing.

Agreed. I have a number of clients who make effective use of the POP3
"leave message on server" feature. As do I.
What's the difference between leaving the message on the server when you
want to with POP3 or leaving the message on the server all the time with
IMAP? I'm of the opinion that choice is good.
