itself, but how about if some enterprising manufacturer built a
cartridge with a direct digital output? Firewire, USB or S/PDIF? Built
in RIAA equilisation?

And, could use the standard arm wiring to power/connect the output.

Standard wiring? You'd need to get power up there.
