Default proms last nite...

I am one of
those 'too acclimatised' to the du Pre/Barbirolli versions, etc, to
find
this one easy to warm to.

This is presumably the Elgar - I didn't see/hear the programme. (The
bloody Proms are bad timing for me - I still haven't played last years
recordings!!)

Interesting.

I always found Du Pre too overwrought for me and I much preferred the
more restrained approach of Paul Tortelier and Beecham , for example.

I agree. I have a fabulous mono JDP/LSO/Barber Olly (HMV ALP2106) which
is very dramatic (the definitive?) but also a little *laboured* and the
'cello is very *ripe* when compared to the Robert Cohen/LPO/Del Mar I
have on CFP40342. Unfortunately the CFP is a poor recording (swishing
noises at the all-important start) but the music *soars* in comparison
and the cello does not stand so far forward...

(If I had known you were so keen on the 'cello, I would have pointed you
to these:

But too late now, unfotunately! ;-)

Nice to read something about the music rather than the technology!

Steady on, you'll get a smack from this group's self-appointed
*owner/moderator*....
