It's for real, though. Presumably once the company is in admin, the
bearer of a gift voucher is just another creditor---and they'll be a
long, long way down the list.

Yes, I can see that once the company is in administration, but as things
stand the refusal to accept the voucher as payment strikes me as
obtaining money by deception.
