The EQ of Tandbergs tended to be different to other machines for some

There are only two accepted standards - NAB and CCIR. NAB basically US,
CCIR, European. IIRC at 7.5 ips, NAB uses slightly more top 'lift' on
record, so should sound brighter on a CCIR machine. With the reverse if
recorded CCIR.
Its not just head alignment in my view. So if I get a refurbed reell
deck of some sort and use it, am I going to find similar problems or
more I wonder.
Just EQ it so it sounds best in the editor of your choice.
Has anyone ever done this. Interestingly, i see people
seem to have half track stereo decks still but not the quarter track
ones.
1/4 track was more common for domestic use, IMHO. Tape was pretty
expensive.
I have a 1/4 track Akai kept for transcription purposes. Can do 1 7/8 - 15
ips. My Revox A77 are both 1/2 track, one normal, one high speed.
