Battery op speakers inquiry
You did say you where a soundman didn't you ?
Not heard of watts equal v squared over r ?
eg an amp powered off 9v battery into an 8ohm spkr will give almost 10w
providing it can draw enough...

bit rate challenge
Can any of you produce a clean sounding mp3 of a swept frequency test cd ?
the source has to be a commercial cd with a sweep freq track on it. I
suspect not, I played a test cd in a portable cd...

Newbie question, mp3 quality
Have any of you pro-mp3 bods got a cd with a swept frequency tone on it ?
rip that to an mp3 and then play it back, the higher frequency end of the
sweep will be a dead giveaway ( anti-aliasing ? )....

Old Roberts radio question
If you use 6 x AA NiMH rechargeable cells you can have 2A/Hr rating which
means they will outlast even the best pp9 the overall voltage will be lower
but it shouldn't affect the audio.

USB soundcard
Have you tested with your pc speakers plugged into the laptop ? The inbuilt
speakers are likely to be 1" dia at max and indeed sound dreadful.
SB do a usb2 version of the audigy and also an Extigy...

Are you sure there isn't a soundcard already in the laptop ? I can't
remember seeing one without built in support, usually having 2-3 2.5mm
mini jacks on the side for spkrs/mic/line in.

I would say the mp3 has some low frequency at high volume your speaker can't
handle. A roll off @ 50Hz is not a sub to my thinking, my old Marantz
bookshelf mini-monitors rolled off at 43Hz, my...
