Alright,

Big Newbie here so please bear with me.

I have a 97 Ford Fiesta which has a factory fitted Stereo (its much
bigger than a standard stereo) and also has 2 moulded speakers in the
front doors.

I'm looking into getting a 2nd hand MiniDisc player (with MDLP).

What I'm asking is how easy is it to connect up a new Stereo (its the
electronics bit im most concerned with) bearing in mind I have never
done anything like this before?

I have a number of questions:

a) - How can I remove the original Ford Stereo, are there tools
avaliable

b) - How easy will it be to remove the original ford speakers? Can I
just use a dremel to remove them or is there an easier way? If its too
difficult how likely is it that I could connect them up to a new
stereo (obviously being aware that the quality wont be as good
compared to new speakers).

c) - if I purchase second hand (which is likely) what do I need to
make sure is included. I keep seeing things like "cages". If they dont
come with the stereo are they easy to get hold of in another store?

Thanks for helping the newbie

It is easy if you know how and are experienced, however from what you post
money would be better spent in the long run if you get someone else to fit
these for you.

Tools will be available to remove the original unit.
You will need a facia panel for the vehicle (see the incar express website.
Get a Haynes manual for your type of vehicle (DON'T GUESS)
If you do purchase previously owned then obviously make sure the unit
support MD LP , I got the Kenwood 6273 but you younger pups may prefer the
Sony offerings. Also obviously make sure it has all the bits like cage and
intact leads.

Ok

I have experience with modding xbox consoles and building PC's but
never with something as expensive as a car, I do fancy the challenge
though!!

I assume that i'll need some leads like these:

in order to change the stock Ford setting into an ISO connection? I
assume one end connects to the Ford cable and the other to the stereo?

In regards to removing the stereo will a universal tool:

http://tinyurl.com/44ppt

be ok?

Thanks for help so far.

If you are familiar with basic electronics , then yes it is easy, the
flavour of the original post did not indicate that.
I went on to make all sorts of sub woofer enclosures and ICE racksdoor
pockets etc, then discovered chess......
