Because they isolate by a good few dB (10-15 ish) meaning you can listen
quieter and spend less time assaulting your eardrums with a wrung out
personal DAB/MD/CD or whatever you listen to on the move.

They're damned good, forget any earbuds you've heard before - the ER6 is the
cheapest of the decent quality units (hey, I've got some shures as well, I
think they're E1s or E2s but I'm not impressed with them in the same way).
Etymotic ER4s are smaller and better and suffer less cable noise.

No idea! I might aspire to the cheaper Etymotics one day, but five or
six hundred quid for earphone? most unlikely;-)

http://www.etymotic.com suggests $139 and lists some internet
distributors.

So 88GBP inc taxes etc would be a good price
if only the OP would tell us where he got them!
