Agreed. Uninstall Real Player, then run Spybot and remove all the crap.

Can you play real files in any media program with their alternative codec,
or is it just another player?
I find the idea that I should use a different media player for each video
encoding too stupid for words. Why webmasters put quicktime/real format
video up all when there are plainly beter, free alternatives is beyond me.
The BBC using real /is/ terrible. Like if you could only watch the telly
programs on certain brands of set.
In the past the Beeb wouldn't support Dolby Surround encoding in their
programming because "Dolby" was a proprietary technology, not freely
distributed. No such qualms about the infinitely more insidious "Real"
though.
Real Alternative is basically an older version of Media Player (before it
too became evil) coupled with the Real codecs necessary to render live
streams and local files. Real are fiercely protective of their codecs and,
officially, Real Alternative is probably in breach of copyright for the use
of the codec (or some other legal thing).
Alternative is very small, installs from a local drive (not over the net) -
so once you have it you can pass it around (it is freeware) and install it
elsewhere, doesn't require an Internet connection to operate, doesn't "phone
home" and, because it doesn't carry all the excess baggage, adware, spyware
etc that Real Player supports, loads up very speedily. It doesn't interfere
with any other software installations, including later editions of Media
Player.
The trick is not to install Alternative and then uninstall the "official"
player after, as the uninstall process removes the codec which is included
with Alternative and you will have to reinstall Alternative (although this
takes all of 10 seconds).
