Default Best UK hi-fi magazines

Hi,

Please could you suggest which hi-fi magazines are most useful to help short-list kit?
Opinions so far,

1) What Hi-Fi - ubiquitous, easy to read but a bit happy-chappie. Reviews all subjective.
2) Hi-Fi News. I haven't seen much of this but the Hot 100 section seems much too brief.
Refers to articles by author. Does that matter when looking for a consistent view?

I haven't had opportunity to try much of their recommended kit but have found that my
tastes differ markedly with reviews in both magazines. What other magazines etc do you use
to short-list kit if you have limited access to demo kit?

TIA,
James

I think you are looking for the wrong thing. HFN reviews are the
opinions of the individual writers/reviewers. For a consistent view,
you need to find magazines dominated by a single person's opinion.
Unfortunately, I've found more to disagree with in such pages.

Kal (a long term fan of HFN)

All reviews are subjective. Any opinion is subjective. There is no such
thing as an "unbiased" review.
The only reliable opinion is your own - no matter how wrong you might be ;o)

I've always found the hifi pages at the back of Gramophone to be the
most trustworthy.

Me too,

Hifi World, for me at least, seems one of the sanest around.

Their opinions about kit seem the most sensible and consistent over
time that I have read.

LKJ Setright? I thought he was the classic eccentric English motoring
journalist.

(Didn't even know he was still alive!)

I always used to in the old "Geoffrey Horn" days. Unfortunately I find the
current contributors trip out the same sort of hyperbole you get in "hi-fi"
mags.

Roy.

He is, and still writing (excellently) for Car magazine.

Indeed, although I have found the content to be less useful lately.
Gramophone's reviews of AVI equipment assisted me a great deal in
years gone by.
