I'm about to set up a pc based audio system and have a thousand and
one questions. It appears that there's little discussion of this topic
on this NG. Can anyone recommend where I should be looking (websites,
forums etc). Thanks.

three points:

1) silence. The computer should not be full of noisy fans
2) hifi case. Lian-Li do quite a few aluminium pc cases now designed to fit
in a standard sized hifi stack and look the part.
3) audiophile soundcard.

Good points. For silencing your computer, I recommend consulting:

Another point to consider is your operating system and how it is set
up. I use MS Win2k, which is probably not the most
multimedia-friendly OS to use, but it works fine if you work at it
hard enough. For example, here is one optimizing tutorial:

There are others around. The crucial thing is to get your OS to
assign a dedicated IRQ to your soundcard.
