I am considering buying something from the US costing USD 80 (circa GBP 45).
Will I have to pay import duty on this when it arrives in the UK by post?

Yes you will its over £18 you will pay VAT and import tax plus £8 plus paper
work fees if its the post office, sometimes more if they use fed ex or
other delivery company

The tax charged is not just on the item you buy, its also charged on
delivery and packing costs.

VAT is 17.5% import tax can be as low as 5% or as high as 17%

Most audio stuff I import valves amps cable 320 iec sockets like russ
andrews sell are charged at 9%


If the company send it via the postal system they will pay bill and get
money off you before you get goods.

Yes unless it's a book, check the Customs & Excise website.
You'll probably be hit with import duty, a clearance charge, and VAT on the
total amount.
£18 is the limit free of charge, at the weekly exchange rate.
Simple innit?

Lots of US sellers will put down $20 as the item value on the package -
customs only check a very small percentage of packages so odds are you won't
have to pay anything. People buy iPods, PDAs etc all the time and they are
shipped with $20 declared value and mostly get through fine.

What are you planning to import ?

In my experience ( I've received packages from the USA, China and New Zealand (
of all places ) ) the typical delivery attracts no Customs attention ( including
those where the declared value exceeded £18 IIRC ).
