It depends what you want it for. They range in price from a few
pounds to hundreds - for broadcast use.
For voice over ip. I'd like the mic to be able to comfortaby pic up say
within 2m. I have seeinhesier px 200 headphones and now knowing the above
would like to get a mic that I can clip to these. Do you know anything you
could recommend?

VoIP systems tend to be vox switched to minimise non-payload traffic,
so the idea of picking up from 2 metres rather goes against the spirit
of the thing. In fact, with most systems, it probably won't even work.
Normally you would expect to use a headset with a built in boom mic.
