I think so - too dim-witted to be paying attention the other day!

I think it was on the radio (in the background, not listening too
closely - organ music is commonplace in this household as I can't
get enough of it) and then I heard an announcement mentioning
something about the restoration being finished!

If the Prom is opening with Bach's Toc & Fug on it we all need to be
in our seats a bit sharpish! (And me getting truly ****e FM
reception today!!!)

I'm glad I made my mega subwoofer a few months ago. Not one of those
honking tuned port jobs, but a seriously low Fs driver in a huge
(concrete cupboard) sealed box. This is what I made it for.

Have you got any pictures?

Dave

I did take some while I was making it, loaded them onto the laptop,
and promptly had a disk crash. I can do one of the front panel,
though, I'll chuck it on my website later and post a link.

Will be giving my new tuner a good testing tonight :-)

At seven thirty tonight the proms start, on radio 3, to kick it off
is

Bach/Henry Wood: Toccata and Fugue in D minor

Elgar: The Music Makers

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson (mezzo-soprano)
Martin Neary (organ)
BBC Symphony Chorus
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Leonard Slatkin (conductor)

Have you heard the Albert Hall organ since they rebuilt it?
Incredible!

No thats what I am wanting to hear

Just played my cd and vinyl copies of Toccata and Fugue in D minor

to get in the spirit

OK, the Beeb have pulled this one off big time. Fabulous imaging, and
a real sense of presence. If I have a slight criticism, it is that
they have left the hall out of the audio picture a bit. Come to think
of it, this is the Albert Hall, so again, well done Beeb!

I've got an ancient pair of ex BBC LS 5/1As in the cellar firing up
through grilles as subs. 'Flat' down to 28 Hz, IIRC.

Wonder what frequency the new organ goes down to?

Well, the double open diapason on the pedal organ is 32', whatever
that comes out at.

I'm thinking about 16Hz for the diapason.

Since last year's proms we have bought a DTTV box. Also 'rearranged' the
audio equipment so the TV/DVD system now uses the Quad 988's and a
subwoofer.

I liked the sound via DTTV, but had the impression that the stereo spread
was narrower for the Bach than later on. My only hesitation is that I must
admit not to being much of a fan for Slatkin. His conducting tends to me to
sound a bit 'soft and watercoloured' at times.

Slainte,

Jim

The best made plans of mice & men.....Far too hot for valves last night for
Prom so fed Etude tuner to DAT (48/24) for recording, plugged Senn HD600
into DAT and settled down to watch Prom on muted TV. So far so
good....except at 7:30 realised the half second delay between DAT phones
output & TV picture Doh!! :-(

The interval item on the organ renovation mentioned 64' pipes. I didn't
quite feel the earth move but it did sound jolly good to me.

Oh and I never realised before that "The Planets" contains a forearm cluster
on the organ (ooh err missus).

Roy.

Ah yes, I noticed a slight lack of lip synch in "The Music Makers" between
TV and FM which made it look like a Top of the Pops performance.

Roy.

Right, I was blaming that latency wholly on my DAT recorder. I wonder if
that slight lack of lip sync between TV & FM is the same all over the uk..
(any beeb techies?) Bit of a nuisance that, as there are a few TV live
broadcasts where I choose to use the radio commentary - but that lack of lip
sync scambles your brain ;-)

Mike
