Well, summer's officially here at last (ignore the weather, it's just
a glitch) - tonite is the First Night Of The Proms! So all of you who
like pop music and have systems good enough can tune in and enjoy the
experience of a 'real live event' without the hassle and expense of
actually attending it!! ;-)

(Although I have to say it, if my kit sounded as bad as the PA'd
'live' event that I experienced at the RAH a few weeks back it would
be out on the back lawn in a heap, by now......)

Will be giving my new tuner a good testing tonight :-)

At seven thirty tonight the proms start, on radio 3, to kick it off is

Bach/Henry Wood: Toccata and Fugue in D minor

Elgar: The Music Makers

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson (mezzo-soprano)
Martin Neary (organ)
BBC Symphony Chorus
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Leonard Slatkin (conductor)

Have you heard the Albert Hall organ since they rebuilt it?
Incredible!

I think so - too dim-witted to be paying attention the other day!

I think it was on the radio (in the background, not listening too

closely -
organ music is commonplace in this household as I can't get enough of it)
and then I heard an announcement mentioning something about the

restoration
being finished!

If the Prom is opening with Bach's Toc & Fug on it we all need to be in

our
seats a bit sharpish! (And me getting truly ****e FM reception today!!!)

The best made plans of mice & men.....Far too hot for valves last night for
Prom so fed Etude tuner to DAT (48/24) for recording, plugged Senn HD600
into DAT and settled down to watch Prom on muted TV. So far so
good....except at 7:30 realised the half second delay between DAT phones
output & TV picture Doh!! :-(

Ah yes, I noticed a slight lack of lip synch in "The Music Makers" between
TV and FM which made it look like a Top of the Pops performance.

Right, I was blaming that latency wholly on my DAT recorder. I wonder if
that slight lack of lip sync between TV & FM is the same all over the uk..
(any beeb techies?) Bit of a nuisance that, as there are a few TV live
broadcasts where I choose to use the radio commentary - but that lack of lip
sync scambles your brain ;-)

I don't know if this is the same across the UK, but here [1] the
difference in timings between analogue TV pictures and FM radio sound is
so large as to make the combination unbearable. (Digital TV is, of course.
even worse w.r.t. FM.)

This was one of the reasons I was pleased to get a DTTV box as the sound is
of good quality and reasonably in sync with vision.

Curiously, my recollection is that this wasn't a problem some years ago,
but has become so in recent years.

Slainte,

Jim

[1] Fife. Angus TX for TV. Forgotten where for FM.

I vaguely remember much scrambling around down the back of the telly
when the BBC aired a live 'simulcast' of a Blondie concert on FM and TV.
It worked really well back then. For some reason I seem to recall it was
New Year Eve 1980. I probably still have a cassette of that concert
somewhere.

FM should be near as dammit 'live' although there will be some delay going
through the NICAM codecs used for sending to the transmitters.

TV, on the other hand, could be anything, depending on how many frame
stores etc it goes through on the way to the transmitter. And that's only
analogue TV. The TV sound *should* be delayed to match the picture.

Then, of course, some TV sets themselves delay the picture. Without
introducing a matching delay in the sound.

It's a minefield...
