What exactly is a remastered track ?

I'm thinking of buying a few CDs of my favourite music from the 60s and 70s
(e.g. Cream, Led Zeppelin, etc.)
and there seems to be a choice between originals and remastered.
What's better ? What's the difference ?

In my very limited experience (imvle?!) of remastereds:

Jimi Hendrix - funny thing with these - i bought a few and on my old cdp
they sounded terrible, but on my recent (marantz KI something) they sound
pretty good, complete with all the studio hum and hiss.
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were He pretty good I think, and stands up well to
my rather tatty vinyl copy. I think they may have done a few remasters, or
postneo-remaster, or whatever. Mine is about 1994.

But I can't compare them to previous releases on CD, only vinyl, and I'd say
they're pretty good. Overall I don't understand the notion of remastered
master tapes - is there some sort of oxymoron there? I can only assume it's
got something to do with the mix, and I'd like to think they don't 'add
emphasis' etc. Mmm - not much help then, over to someone else!

absolutely superb, of excellent sound quality, and well worth

I'm sure it is but what does it have to do with remasters?

Remasters is a CD box set by Led Zeppelin which doesn't sound as
good as the original LPs or first generation CD, but it was made from
some thirty year old tapes found in a box at the back of a cupboard :-)
