Jeeezus man, electric violin ???

What's wrong with the beauty of an acoustic violin ?

Absolutely nothing!

To date I have spent $1000 for a 1/2 size instrument then $2000 for a 3/4
size. I am about to pay up to $10,000 for a full size acoustic violin for my
boy because he plays well and I believe he can play REALLY well if he sticks
at it. He has a good teacher and he has asked me for an electric violin so
he can play in his school band. The biggest problem with 14 year old boys is
to keep them focussed and to encourage them to practise. If an electric
fiddle will help keep his interest in playing violin rather than wandering
elsewhere then why would I not indulge him?

My son (aged 14) who is a promising young violinist has asked me to buy

him
an electric violin. We have been told that an acoustic amplifier is

required
and that the type used for electric guitars are not suitable for violin.
Can anyone recommend a newsgroup which I might try to get advice on

suitable
instruments and amplifiers or even make recommendations from personal
experience?

Thanks in advance.

You can but ready-made electric violins from "electronic music" shops.
I don't have any experience of them, but this place advertises them (and
sell in the UK):
http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann/thoiw2_index.html

I would have thought the instrument would just plug into the line level
input of any hi-fi amplifier, but I'm sure places that sell the violins will
advise on what is needed.

Too modest. They simply are the best.

Try uk.music.folk Lots of electrics in use in the folk world these days. I
believe "Bridge" are highly regarded - but what do I know, I'm a melodeon
player?

As far as "acoustic" amps go, AER are about the best - allegedly. No, I have
heard them and they are very good. Actually, those nice chaps on
uk.rec.guitar could probably recommend amps suitable for acoustic guitar.
They should be fine for electric fiddle.

Regards,

Roy.

Just a follow up to my previous post.

I was at a ceilidh last night and spotted that the fiddle player was using
an electric. It had a very natural sound (actually like a violin!). So I
went and had a chat with her. It was in fact a Bridge. Apart from the
excellent sound she also pointed out that the Bridges are also nicely
weighted and balanced and apparently play like an acoustic fiddle. So 10/10
for them .

I don't know where you are, but if you have a branch of "The Music Room"
nearby, I know they stock both Bridge and AER.

Roy.

Thanks Roy. I am in rural New Zealand. However since I have access to the
Internet you could say the world is my shopping mall and I will have a look
for Bridge.
