Soon after I turned 40 the eyesight started to go. Now, since turning 50 I
have noteiced that one ear has better HF response than the other. Today I
was calibrating the replay side of a tape recorder using a test tape. I
could hear the 10KHz tone but when the 12.5KHz tone came up I couldn't hear
a thing! Me ears are shot to pieces.

OK, that's not funny and not a thing I'd take the **** about (I'm 57......
;-), but you might be interested to know that my next door neighbour came in
once to hear a 'valve amp' and he said he thought it was very 'clear' and
liked it. He's in his 60's and *stone deaf* in one ear with the other one on
its way, apparently....???

Didn't mean to sound like I was taking the ****, more like ****ed of
actually (and I'm 54)

My neighbour is a country singer/songwriter and I do all his mixing and
mastering for him. He worked in a large engineering workshop in the 60s
and his hearing has suffered as a result. He does rough mixes on a
cassette recorder which end up with so much hiss I can hardly hear the
music. He can't hear the hiss poor chap.

No, I meant that *I* wouldn't take the **** out of summat like that...

(Wouldn't fekkin' dare at my age with all the shooting I've done in the
past - that one comes up and bites you in arse, believe me...)

Yep, we live in a Pussy World these days, but I reckon I might have worn ear
defenders at certain times in the past.....

(Touch wood, as I said before - I'm the one who hears the phone when we're
outdoors....)

Industrial noise is notorious for that. High level impulsive characteristic.
Makes measuring 'safe' SPLs with slow response dBA meters rather hit and miss.

Any chance that you're suffering from otosclerosis? (I'm 66 and do.) A
hearing check should determine if you do.

In my younger days about 30 years ago I did a few turns on a double blind
HiFi listening panel and I could discriminate with all but the best; these
days the only way I can hear in stereo is to put one earphone into my left
ear, and arrange the right earphone in just the right position so that my
hearing aid in its "T" position responds to the magnetic fields from the
'phone. (There's no way that my right ear can hear well enough without the
extra amplification from the hearing aid.)
(I'm astigmatic as well!)

Have you been to the doc? It might be wax. I've suffered on and off over the
years and a good syringing brings back the HF.

Roy.

Not yet but several people have suggested I should - so I will. Thanks.

Drop[ off in HF response is normally an indicator of noise induced
hearing loss.
A recent report by The Technion suggests Vitamin E can actually reverse
some types of hearing loss.
