Default MP3 Players

There are a number of pretty cheap (say £30) MP3 players available based on
flash memory storage. So, given that I aleady have a 512kB SD memory card
(for my digital camera), it seems that I could get one of these players and
be able to have about five hours of music. That would give me a few Mahler
symphonies and songs and get me through a day's gardening very nicely. I
already have a Sony Minidisc player, which I love, but I am always a bit
nervous about exposing it to the rough and tumble of everyday outdoor life

The only comments I have read about MP3 players tend to come from people who
are listening to quite different kinds of music. What are the views of
people on this group about the sound quality of these MP3 players? Any
recommendations?

Thanks
Steve

I listen to a whole range of stuff on my iPod - from heavier classical
(Mahler, Wagner, big choral masses etc) right through Be-Bop & modern jazz
to heavy rock with a bit of techno/hard house thrown in for good measure.
As long as you have a good quality rip using a decent MP3 encoder at a high
enough rate (I use 320kbps LAME MP3), it sounds fine. Most MP3 players come
with pretty crappy earphones so it's worth investing a few quid in a
replacement pair of earpieces.

I can happily listen to it for hours at a stretch in the car or when working

I apologise in advance for any offence caused :-)
