Default Quad 11L speakers - anyone have any experience?

Hi

I'm considering a pair of Quad 11L speakers to upgrade my current
system. They get rave reviews in all the mags but has anyone on here
actually heard a pair?

They're about the right size for my system and room (Arcam Alpha 9,
Arcam Diva CD82) but I want something that won't sound boomy near a
wall (about 12 inches away). I had to return a pair of B&W CDM 1's for
that reason.

Or maybe someone could recommend something similar - I just love the
maple burr finish of the Quads.

Hope this helps in some way :

I read reviews , I listened at the dealers , I thought they were ****e , I
didn't buy , I don't trust reviews , I use my own ears .

Motto : try listening to them if you can , its the only way .

I have a pair connected to a Rotel RA-02 and its matching CD player. I
think they are great but they do need to be kept off the rear wall. I
think with speakers more than any other product you must listen to them
first.

Did not sound lively enough , very compressed sound , bass was lacking , not
very detailed , I think the term is
" warm " , I just didn't like them . It could have been the dealers demo
room & maybe I ought to have tried a home demo but I had lost interest by
then . . The point I was trying to make was that rave reviews didn't make
me buy them at all , you have got to listen to them in your own home if
possible , its the only way .The finish on them was superb though

I also have a pair, connected to a Quad 303, and I would agree that
they do need to be kept away from the rear wall and especially
corners.

That said, I tried a comparison between the 11L and the 57
electrostatics in my living room. I also compared them to Stax
electrostatic headphones, costing about twice as much as the speakers,
when I auditioned them.

The 11L came out surprisingly well in both cases and I would have no
hesitation recommending them if they suit your room and your musical
tastes. (They are probably not the best speaker if you like loud heavy
metal; but are very good for 'classical' music.)

My description of the sound is that they are neutral, like the
electrostatics, but lacking their openness and clarity - like the vast
majority of moving coil speakers.

For the price they are, in my view, excellent.

If you do get a pair, don't forget to get some stands for them.
(Atacama stands filled with sand work for me.) They will not perform
well on a shelf close to a wall.

I did go and listen to them today - I liked them a lot.
I liked them so much I bought them.

They sound superb with my system as well - I'm knocked out with them.
I've never heard so much detail in my CD collection and for their size
they produce a remarkably controlled bass. Very neutral as stated and
they match my Arcam system superbly.

One happy chappy :-)

Good for you. The bonus is they do get better with a little running in.

Definition's going to improve when I get them on some decent stands as
well. Anyone know who makes the stands used in Quad's advertising?
