Tubes, as in 'toobs are for boobs'.

Sand amps? Do you mean those warm glass bottles that give off a rosy glow???

That's the ones!

No, those amps that used little blocks of compressed silicon and which
bleach all the 'air', 'space', 'involvement', 'emotion' and 'life' out of
the music...

(See http://www.pbs.org/transistor/album1...ylesworth.html)

:-)

Perhaps you were thinking of these:

Are all these marked on the score? Must have missed them...

If amount of sand per active device is any guide, than sand amps use glass
envelope valves. Indeed, there's probably more sand in the glass seals in a
metal envelope valve (origional 6L6 for example) than there is in a power
transistor.

I do keep reminding them that glass bottles have a lot more sand
content than transistors do, that's true................

:-)

It wasn't intended to be a fight, but Andre Jute turns out to be one
of the most ignorant, egomaniacal and abusive jackasses that I've
encountered in a long time.

Andre has been around for a long time. A few years ago he was the
subject of universal derision in RAT, but he seems to have his baying
acolytes now.
Many years ago he was the author of probably the worst book on building
home-made specialist cars (and kit cars) that I've read. Allegedly he
possesses a considerable fortune, some of it family derived, and some of
it acquired under dubious circumstances in South Africa. A few years ago
he was living in Southern Ireland, but I've no clue where he is now.
