Quite. If someone threw a load of them at me, I'd be sure to try
and catch them, just to sell them on!

And then I'd wash my hands of the 50 years of grime, dust and cobwebs that'd
have accumulated on each one. Ugh!

Hey, I've had an idea! With some modifcation, they might make ok fly killers!

I would be interested to know what the ESL-57s sold for (* 2 for a pair)
back when they were a current model, and what that'd be "in real terms"
today. I suppose they'd be pretty expensive, but that's a guess.

The HFN review in the November 1957 issue quotes a price of 52 UKP per
speaker. (Given the common use of mono, speakers were generally priced per
item, not per pair in those far-off days... ;- )

Hard to compare this with other speakers of the period as the range of
types and prices was broad, and many people then used to buy drive units
and fit them into their own enclosures.

Take yer pick for comparisions.

Guy Fountain Autograph was 130 UKP.

Warfedale SFB3 was 39 pound 10 bob.

Warfedale W3 same price as above.

'CQ' speakers around 20 Pounds.

etc.

Jim

Just a word on aesthetics - it's pretty noticeable that partners,
usually women, seem to be the arbiters and authority here. Why is that?!
Don't blokes care? I certainly do and would like the whole thing to be
as discrete as possible.

I do care to some extent about the appearance. However when I listen I find
that I tend to close my eyes anyway. The exception being when I'm listening
to a TV broadcast or DVD of a concert, when I am looking at the display.
Even then, I often simply close my eyes to 'concentrate' on the stereo
image rather than the visual one.

Personally, though, I quite like the appearance of the Quad speakers.

Slainte,

Jim

A few comparisons from roughly the period might help. A Mini - '59 - cost
500 quid. 2 star petrol - slightly lower octane than our present premium -
5 gallons for 1 quid. 20 king sized fags 5 bob (25p) A pint of beer around
2 bob (10p)

The other thing that appears to have escaped the 'experts' on the 57 is
that they were also available in black in later years.

Is there any way of finding out when they were made from their serial
number? Mine are black ones and I am interested to know exactly when they
would have been made.

The best-looking ELS57s I ever saw were advertised as having bronze
girlles.......................... :-)
