Personally, though, I quite like the appearance of the Quad speakers.
The other thing that appears to have escaped the 'experts' on the 57 is
that they were also available in black in later years.
Anyone seen/heard these in "stacked" mode

Is there any way of finding out when they were made from their serial
number? Mine are black ones and I am interested to know exactly when they
would have been made.
In fact my ESL63's started out in Teak with brown grilles. They changed
the wood to rosewood with black "stockings" as Quad term them some 9
years ago. They were made in 1981 and have been serviced twice.
Not much else "consumer" grade stuff lasts like that.....

Other interesting fact was 'matched pairs' of '57s. The only thing they
had to match was the wood trim...

The best-looking ELS57s I ever saw were advertised as having bronze

How about Ted Heath's black and chrome ESLs?
I don't think he would allow any bronzed girlies in his music room:

Does it matter? there was no 'mk 2' version, a '57 is a '57.

Interesting, they must have been some of the very first made, since
1981 was when the ESL- 63 was launched. The '57 of course had metal
grilles, so not just a simple change of socks.

Not that I recall. However I did once have a pair side-by-side, connected
in parallel, to check that the amp I was trying would drive two in
parallel. Sounded OK. :-)
They were suppose to be stacked vertically. The one at the top being
right way up the bottom one being inverted...
i.e. upside down....

There were modifications throughout the run.
