The other thing that appears to have escaped the 'experts' on the 57 is
that they were also available in black in later years.

Anyone seen/heard these in "stacked" mode

Is there any way of finding out when they were made from their serial
number? Mine are black ones and I am interested to know exactly when they
would have been made.

In fact my ESL63's started out in Teak with brown grilles. They changed
the wood to rosewood with black "stockings" as Quad term them some 9
years ago. They were made in 1981 and have been serviced twice.

Not much else "consumer" grade stuff lasts like that.....

Other interesting fact was 'matched pairs' of '57s. The only thing they
had to match was the wood trim...

Not that I recall. However I did once have a pair side-by-side, connected
in parallel, to check that the amp I was trying would drive two in
parallel. Sounded OK. :-)

Slainte,

How about Ted Heath's black and chrome ESLs?
I don't think he would allow any bronzed girlies in his music room:

Does it matter? there was no 'mk 2' version, a '57 is a '57.

Interesting, they must have been some of the very first made, since
1981 was when the ESL- 63 was launched. The '57 of course had metal
grilles, so not just a simple change of socks.

They were suppose to be stacked vertically. The one at the top being
right way up the bottom one being inverted...

i.e. upside down....

I have a pair of black grill ones with consecutive S/N's - 51646 and 51647 .
Production dates(sourced from an ex Quad employee) are as follows:

Number Year of Manufacture
1-2000 1958
2001-4000 1959
4001-6000 1960
6001-8000 1961
8001-10000 1962
10001-12000 1963
12001-14000 1964
14001-16000 1965
16001-18000 1966
18001-20000 1967
20001-22000 1968
22001-24000 1969
24001-26000 1970
26001-28000 1971
28001-30000 1972
30001-32000 1973
32001-35000 1974
35001-38500 1975
38501-41000 1976
41001-44000 1977
44001-47400 1978
47401-50300 1979
50301-52100 1980
52101-52800 1981
52801-53000 1982
53001-53150 1983
53151 - end 1984

Mine were therefore made in late 1981. Interesting to note that from the
release of the ESL63 in 1981, the phase out period for the '57 was 3 years
and they made about 350 or so in that period. Any other manufacturer would
have cut production immediately on release of a new model.

Regards

Mike

There were modifications throughout the run.
