Don't waste your money on expensive speaker cable. Maplin do a decent
enough one off the reel by the metre. XR72 which costs 0.69p per metre
inclusive of VAT.
The rule used to be that you took your budget and divided by four. A quarter
for the amp and the player and a quarter each for the speakers. The balance
seems to have changed away from the speakers and I think that this is
misguided. Speakers are inherently a problem. They have fundamental flaws
like one driver having to produce low notes that then modulate the higher
frequencies, low efficiency, resonance and varying impedance making smooth
characteristic curves unlikely. Distortion is high compared with the
electronics. I think more money ought to go into speakers.

You followed up the wrong post (mine), left my name at the top,
yet included none of my post. The post you meant to follow up
was Dave Plowman's.

Agreed. I would suggest 90% for the speakers. I.e. to match 400 pounds
of amplifier and CD/DVD, the speakers would need to cost around 3,600
pounds to get something of equivalent quality.
Perhaps I am an extremist in this area; my headphones cost about the
same as my amplifier and DVD player combined.

0.69 p a metre? ****, that's cheap.

You could easily get away with 1/2 that, and suffer NO loss. (In a
normal system / room)

It's figure of eight cable, and has a conductor size of about 2.5mm sq -
so suitable for pretty well any domestic installation.
Heavy duty flexible 2 core mains cable is near unobtainable in the UK.

Whoooosssshhhh!
That was the sound of my post (see above) flying over your head.
The cable costs £0.69 including VAT for one metre; not 0.69p.

Well, it might be if I knew what AO meant?
But sorry for the typo. Others apparently understood what was meant.
FWIW, you can't use the GBP sign on usenet. It's not an approved
character. It may, or may not come out as intended...
