I have used 2 pairs, one set in series as a centre speaker! The other pair

Using two for the center will result in interference that corrupts the
lateral dispersion of the speakers. One will work better in most
cases.
That figures - I don't see it as too much of a problem as I can't get the
centre pair close enough to the screen to get best results (not shielded)
and the box designs have a projecting surround on the front, which will be
playing havoc with the dispersion anyway! Interesting experiment though. I
started off with a single speaker and it just seems to sound "better" with
two somehow. The spare one will just sit there & rot if I don't use it
anyway... :-) It's a temporary setup anyway - the boxes are held together
end-to-end with blue-tack... ;-)
