BBC Proms Radio 3 - relentless stutter
I have been listening to a number of the Proms broadcasts from Radio 3,
through dialup/Real Player, etc. and/or BBC Radio Player.
Results of all of what I describe below seems to have been about the
same through both media.
Except for an occasional stutter and break, nothing enough to seriously
interrupt the flow of musical thought, I tuned into these for a little
over a week with no problem. Starting about two or three days ago, I
get a constant stutter, alternating with playing the broadcast at a
conspicuously low volume level, with either no stutter or minimal, then
for it to come on full blast again, stuttering at full volume over the
music.
Is anyone else tuning to these broadcasts experiencing the same problem
as I? Please speak up, if so. If I am alone in experiencing this,
which I doubt, please email me if you know the solution to the problem
- . I am very anxious about this because I have been
looking forward to the Metzmacher/Cascioli broadcast tomorrow, and
would like to be able to clearly hear it tomorrow.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Buy a new radio. DAB isn't bad. Compression is the biggest problem with
broadcasts these days

Oh yes it is! Don't waste your money. Buy a good FM tuner and fit a good
outdoor aerial.
If you are content to listen to a portable radio you might find DAB
acceptable on some channels, but if you listen to it through a decent
amplifier and loudspeaker you will hear what it really sounds like and you
will be very disappointed.

BBC Proms Radio 3 - relentless stutter
I am getting something that is slightly more resembling reception at
midnight here - same as 6 am in London (still nothing to compare with a
week ago, or nearly so). Could this have to do with the time I am
tuning in, indicating that nothing has been fixed at all, or is there
actually some repair underway? In five days from now, it will be too
late for the broadcast I most want to hear from the Proms, and I am
very damn nervous about it. Just what could be going on on the other
end? I can not afford at the moment the other technologies available
to others here.
The reception that should have been good for a pretty good hot dog from
Venezuela should be at least equally good for Ingo Metzmacher - it
being too early to really cast aspersions on Dudamel, but in the
company of someone with as thorough intellect and musicality as
Metzmacher, much else pales.

Oh, that's interesting. I'd been thinking of getting a cheap portable
DAB radio (thinking about the Bush one for £50 at Aldi's just now.) How
does it compare to the R3 broadcast you get on Freeview? I've recorded a
few of them, and the quality was good. Not CD quality, but I thought it
compared well with good quality FM recordings. Is it really not worth
buying a DAB radio? The portability is important.

So buy a portable DAB then - who cares about the nth degree of *quality* for
'music on the move'??? (And at 50 quid FFS!) Better to get 100% of a
'reasonably good' signal to have a supposedly better one (?) coming and
going, isn't it?

True- but I wouldn't always be listening to it on noisy trains (or the
atrociously noisy Manchester trams!) where it wouldn't make a difference
at all.

Sure, but I'd probably be interested in recording some stuff onto my
laptop from it. I was just wondering how the quality would compare to
freeview, that's all. I'm probably still going to buy it!

Trains and trams is going to rule out Freeview, aint it??

Keep it simple - grab the DAB for portable and get a cheap but good
secondhand FM tuner (if you've still got a signal where you live) for
recordings, no....?
(There's 66 FM tuners on eBay right now with prices from ONE PENNY atm:

- plus a bit of postage, of course!!)

On R3 and R4 (most of the time), I doubt most could tell the difference
between DAB and Freeview. But most pop stuff on DAB sounds truly dreadful
due to low bitrate. Apparently, the public want choice over quality for
this sort of stuff. Allegedly.
