Default PHONO output direct to Speakers?

Apologies in advance to Group for this dumb newbie question.
I know basic electronics but not audio.

I have bought a standard DVD player. The S-video output is connected
to an overhead projector. But as for the sound . . .
It has two standard stereo output phono sockets - red and white.
My question:
Can I connect these directly to speakers or do I need some form of
amplifier?

If I need an amplifier, I have an old B&O Beocentre 5000 (great in its
day!!)
It has an AUX (din type) input(?) on the front (beside the MIC input)
Likely I could connect the DVD sound to this and use the B&O system
for my DVD sound output?

In hope

Mikey
