Default Recording problems with a sony twin tape deck

more from the 'CM school' of popular uk.rec.audio-ism

Hello everyone,
I am having a problem with my tape deck, and I am wondering if there
is anyone here in this newsgroup that could possibly help me.
I am trying to make some backup copies of some tapes I have, most of
them are recorded on at single speed and I have some tapes which were
recorded on at twice the speed (where you can record 120 minutes worth
on 60 min tape). Anyway the sales guy sold me a top model Sony twin
tape deck today so that I can get on with copying my tapes. The deck
has with Dolby B C NR and pitch control, also has option of setting
record level . Main problem is no matter what I do the end result is
very bad. The backup copy plays very very bad and has a lot of noise,
I have to turn the volume right up to get any sound what's so ever
from the backup tape. Other problem is as soon as I start recording
the volume also shuts down, so I can not monitor what I am recording.
How can I get around this?

Sounds like either you have the volume setting too low, or the recorder is
faulty.

I also will want to convert these tapes (at
a latter time) into digital form like on CD. Can someone tell me what
hardware (easy to use) will I require. I have PC with sound card, Amp
with digital In and Out etc.

All you really need is a 2phono/3.5mm cable to go from amp line out to
soundcard line in or, if the soundcard has digital inputs, you could
connect digitally. You can use free software like Audiograbber.
