Hi,
Has anyone else noticed that the forums area from the Cambridge Audio
website has disappeared today?
Hopefully this is just a technical issue - there were a number of really
good questions about the new 640H hard-disk server which CA could do with
answering...
Any response from CA regarding this would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Yes, I noticed it had vanished as well. I fhad ound the forums very
useful - when I had trouble with my 640T it was only via the forum that
I discovered it was a well-known fault not a one off.
There had been a lot of critial discussion and unanswered questions on
the forums of late and I guess CA decided it was bad for their image.
One can hardly blame them.

Would you care to elucidate? I have a 640T which is currently giving me no
problems at all, but should I be concerned in case it does? Is there
anything that I could check?

You can tell if you have the old or new one by pressing and holding in
for 2 seconds the "info" button. This will display the version
number. V2.0 is the old one. V3.0 is the new. V3.0 also has a yellow
dot on the carboard box.
Interesting. I seem to have the old version, but it has never given any
trouble. It's fed through a mains switch that feeds all the hi-fi and TV
equipment (except the bits that need to be on all the time to meke
unattended recordings), so most of the evening it is switched on and tuned
to Classic FM, or occasionally Radio 3, and whenever I want to listen to
it, it's always there. I haven't noticed any loss of signal or random
switching of lights. I normally listen on FM, not DAB - does the fault
affect both systems or just one of them?

The 'lost signal' fault only affects DAB.
I used to leave the system tuned to Radio 3 most of the time and would
find that it would lose signal typically once every day or so. This is
very frustrating if you use recording equipment of course.
The "light" problem is only present on V2.
Although CA will replace any V2 equipment that people bring back to
their supplier they are not recalling them all.

I was in RS Sheffield a couple of weeks ago - they're as in the dark
as everyone else concerning the HD CD - 'maybe stuck in a boat between
here and China' was their best bet. Ther latest I heard was a
software/iPod connection problem, and testing may go on until xmas.

Hah!
Same boat as my sodding amp then!
Earlier today, I chased up the 300B amp I'm expecting from HK and was told
it isn't even in the country yet - after 4 weeks!! (Reputable eBay seller
looking in to it...) I was pretty jarred off in a '**** that, never again'
sort of way until I learned that our piano tuner had died unexpectedly from
natural causes sometime recently.* He was younger than me - equilibrium
restored pdq I can tell you!! (Poor sod - nice enough bloke, if a little
dour....)
(Mine dew, don't get me started on the *un-****ing-believable* Porcel Farce
Worldwide 'Thank you for holding' malarkey or I'll end up joining him!!)
*Eat, drink, play records and be merrie moi beauties - for some of us life
*really is* that short, it seems.....!!

Quite right - a bit of perspective, it doesn't *really* matter ...

I have quite a problem with the industry - what's all this 'stay in all
day on the off chance we pop round with your parcel suitably mangled
through our pre-industrial handling systems'. Hmph, it does *sort of*
matter ;-)

Well, there we are, not that important after all :-)
