Newbie question on amplifers (sorry!)

Apart from the lip sync, obviously. And they also ain't always perfect,
picture wise.
Actually I generally find the colour over-saturated on adverts. And
the sound is also over-compressed and loud as well.
Apart from that, I always enjoy the brevity...

Hello Serge: your posts are clearly argued and easy to read.
Before defending Pinkerton you might want to deliberate on why he tells
people
"the Cambridge unit will provide audibly superior performance" or
various other such things that slip indiscriminately out of his mouth,
and which he seems to conveniently forget he said.
Perhaps you might want to stop lying, and taking phrases out of
context. I said that, at the budget of £150 which was being discussed,
it was *probable* that the Cambridge would be audibly superior to the
others mentioned.
Yes, they will have audible differences amongst themselves but they will
sound the same of any highend amp, provided that the highend amp lives
up to the task! You dumb dumb silly old fart.
Oh, and :
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..............
Maybe you should just start using reliable and repeatable listening
tests,
You incompetent bafooon! You know very well that "reliable and
repeatable listening tests" would make *everything* sound the same
across the board.
Clearly however, you prefer lies and misquotation
to any real examination of your flawed beliefs.
The monkey is projecting again.

Assuming they are films, more likely to be the copying to DVD or

I wasn't talking about copies - the varying standards I'm referring to
are on straightforward rentals.
You think those *films* are mastered on DVD? And you get the master on
rental? ;-)
???
No idea - I'm talking about what falls on the mat from Amazon....
Movies from the TV are almost always poor quality and lipsynch is a big
problem.
Think you might find investing in a decent STB will help. Just because
they're digital doesn't mean they're all the same.
Think about it - if a STB can deliver sharp and bright one minute and
then....????
Then there's the
problem with LCD and Plasma displays, sync wise...
Nope - CRT.....
(LCD and Plasma are for 'technosuckers'....)
Oh - and these days the makers of the film usually supply the highest
quality copy of it on DigiBeta to the broadcasters. Of course with old
films it may not be the case.
No idea - see above re. 'what falls on the mat'.....
(Adverts from the telly, of course, are razor sharp with much

No, but they are *frequently* better than the programme either side of
them - well, movies anyway, I don't know about ordinary programmes....

Why would you need a reference for comparisons, since all amplifiers
sound the same?.
Who ever said that?
You did, many times. You despicable pricky old fart.

OK.
Editing ads out of TV recordings (and 'topping and tailing') with DVD Author
causes most lipsynch problems (or appears to make transmitted lipsynch
worse)....

The whole thing is a nightmare. All sorts of things can cause sync errors
both at home and professionally.
I've got more than one FreeView box and if you have them on together on
the same station you can hear different delays from them - not as great
as between analogue and any digital transmission, but still different.

I don't doubt it, we've got Panasonic, Sagem and Goodmans STBs here and the
difference in delay has been noticed but I have never run comparisons -
varies with different broadcasts on different days, from what I can see. The
one in use (I never use it myself) is the Goodmans as the buttons are quick
and the screens are the most user-friendly, I'm told....??
The Panasonic was booted up into the loft for lipsynch problems I've just
been informed and also that lipsynch is *much* better on the Goodmans,
apparently!! I wouldn't know - I watch probably/almost certainly less than
30 minutes live TV a *week* (not counting news programmes) and what I do
watch is mainly on little analogue portables!! (OK, no way as much as an
hour a week!!)
It's all very far from satisfactory, this day and age and most definitely
*not* progress....

My favourite out of the ones I've got is a Sony. By far the nicest to use.
My Sagem - a freebie - keeps claiming there are new channels which their
aren't. And of course takes time to update.

I enjoy good UK made (mainly) drama. Life on Mars. Hotel Babylon. Judge
Deed. Even The Bill. ;-) A couple of hours in the evening. And love a lot
of the repeats like Morse, Frost, etc. Even the much older stuff like The
Avengers, Sweeny and so on. Although production values on things like The
Sweeny ain't brilliant. You can hear every edit. ;-)

When you spread a near fixed pot of money across a *vastly* wider choice
of channels costs have to be cut. And the easiest cost to cut is
engineering standards.

Now that you mention it, my Sagem is being used by a family member and I
believe it does the same thing!!

Nope, none of them. Swim has the telly on all the time so I catch glimpses -
squealing kids and morons with a million (or two) to spend on a holiday
schloss in Bavaria most of the time....
Even the much older stuff like The
Avengers,
Aha! You've reminded me - see:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Avengers.jpg
I have now got it recording on this computer!!
Absolute doddle - find it and double click it and the job's done!! All I
gotta do is remember to leave the computer on!! :-)
(Mine dew, I still haven't finished the last episode yet!!)
Sweeny and so on. Although production values on things like The
Sweeny ain't brilliant. You can hear every edit. ;-)
I love the wildlife progs and some gardening stuff (Swim's main TV interest)
and see some bits of them - but played always back from HDD. They usually
seem to be extraordinarily good - the camerawork on some of these wildlife
progs is incredible and beggar's belief at times!!

Yep.
I'll avoid the usual comments about 'digital' & 'modern' being
quicker/easier/flashier/cheaper with much more choice (?) but feck-all real
worth.... ;-)
