I know this may prompt cry's of "but you like SET's why do you want one
of those", but I don't suppose anyone here in the UK has a unwanted HP
334 or such like that they would consider exchanging for a sensible sum
of money? I have been watching on ebay for some time, but can't talk
myself into paying the shipping from the states where they all seem to be.

I'm sure there must be a few around. I've got a 339A, one on there a
snip at 1200 sheets!.

There are quite a few suppliers of S/H test gear in the UK.

If you can find one, go for a Ferrograph RTS1. It is an all-in-one audio
measuring set, includes distortion and level, has a low distortion
oscillator and can measure drift and wow and flutter. They were made in the
UK, so you won't have to pay shipping charges. Measures down to 0.1%
full-scale, so if the distortion is below what you can measure, you don't
need to worry about it.

or perhaps an HP/Agilent 8903B or one of their dynamic signal analysers from
someone like Livingston Hire. None are cheap options though! HP334's? They
bring back memories.
