You could also follow Keith's example and build stuff even cheaper still,
maybe cheap enough to just chuck the wood, flog the drivers on ebay and
try
again if it didn't work out.

I've had more fun discovering the old kit than all the stuff I bought new
(gathering dust upstairs) has ever brought me and luckily Keith is near
enough for me to pop over regularly and hear even more different kit
without
spending any money.

Next I may try DIY SET and horns, or I may try the World Designs aperiodic
design, or I might stick with what I have for a while as the music has
forced me to stop typing and listen more than once this evening. But the
next step will be DIY because I want to and while it may be a waste of

time it won't be a waste of mine.

Different strokes and all that. I went through the building phase for
about twenty years, until it became obvious that (a) I spent more on
parts than I'd need to buy a perfectly good amplifier, and (b) there
was no way that I could build speakers that even approached what was
available comnmercially.

What I'm trying to say is that there's a load of not so young 'uns appearing
on the scene who aren't going to listen to those who went before :-)

Nobody has to take advice, it just sits there on offer. There is one
obvious caveat - if you're going to get into buidling hi-fi as a
hobby, and you really do want to build *good* stuff, then you're going
to need some really good test gear. Now, if you don't actually work in
the electronics industry, that's going to be expensive.

Hi Phil. Most of the young 'uns are happy with their
personal -mp3 players, but there is a lot of interest in speaker-building
and valve audio. I have recently made contact with the Lowther
Club, and hope to go to one of their get-togethers in Stockholm later in
the Spring.

There are not many people who have the dedication to actually build a
speaker or an amp. But there is a great deal of satisfaction in a
home-brew which can perform as well as any commercial product.

Listen, compare, and make up your own mind - Just as with music
it's a personal choice, If you find you prefer an SS amp with
three-way speakers, that's fine. If you like a valve PP with
dual concentrics, then I am happy for you. If you like SET
with horns that's fine too. The important thing is that you are
listening to music, and enjoying the experience.

Interestingly enough, given his fame, I didn't spot one of him. It was
an exhibition of Victorian paintings (and some photographs from the
same era) of assorted black people, generally done in England, but
good ol' Bill Darby didn't appear. The again, he was shall we say not
the most attractive of models.... :-)
