Default Phono Pre-Amp bass missing in action?

Now I've got my turntable sorted, although I'm spinning my discs via PC

budget phono-stages. (esp the Maplins one?).

Sorry I didnt think that one through properly. Apart from using my
Logitech 'puter phones rather than my HD 25s I was also copying a rare
record from a friend from 1975, it was the pressing that had less
bass than I would have expected for that particular type of reggae.

Come to think of it, would an external stage of say £40-50 be better
than the one installed inside my old Cambridge Audio A500 ?
