Phono Pre-Amp bass missing in action?
Now I've got my turntable sorted, although I'm spinning my discs via PC
& headphones, the bass just sounds absent. Is this a common theme with
budget phono-stages. (esp the Maplins one?).
Come to think of it, would an external stage of say £40-50 be better
than the one installed inside my old Cambridge Audio A500 ?

No, it's a common theme with headphones...

Possibly/maybe, but who knows?
No vinyl system is gonna complain about having a decent phono stage forced
upon it, but even the one in my cheapo (60 quid) Argos amp is really quite
tidy and listenable - so I'd guess (I don't *know*) the Cambridge Audio PS
would probably be at least as good as flopping out 40/50 quid on a cheap
standalone. Save up for summat like a Graham Slee if you want to be sure of
a real step up (pardon the pun) - I'm told they are very good, but haven't
used one myself....

Suggest you look out for an old S/Hand Audiolab 8000 pre amp or
integrated, that disc input in those is excellent

No the bass was anything but absent on the clips you posted - no
problem at all. The stage in your Cambridge is actually very good
indeed.
Spend your money on a decent pair of headphones, and you won't find
them in a computer shop - you do need to go to a Hi Fi shop for them.
When choosing go for comfort if you intend to listen for long periods.

There was plenty of LF on the clips you posted, so it's not the pre-amp
that's the problem. What does other stuff via the PC and headphones sound
like?

No, its a common theme with budget headphones and speakers. Good bass still
costs money.
The phono preamps in most mid-fi and better receivers are usually pretty
good in terms of frequency response.
The MP3 files you posted belied your claim. They measured and sounded like
they had plenty of bass.
Of course I was listening to them through fairly credible headphones - Sony
MDR 7506, Sennheiser HD 580, and Audio Technica ATH AD700.
The 580s are probably out of your price range, but stretching a little to
acquire the Sonys or the ATs would probably be a life-changing experience
for you.
I was listening through my Logitech headphones, should know better I
guess, I wear them because they are very comfortable but the sound is
average. I do have Senn. HD25s downstairs and the Senn. PCX250 for
plane/tube etc.
Speakers are Mordaunt Short 914 FWIW
My mistake for forgetting I was wearing questionable headphones!
If you're really stetched for cash, try some Koss "The Plug" earphones for
about $20. They have nothing if not bass.

Sorry I didnt think that one through properly. Apart from using my
Logitech 'puter phones rather than my HD 25s I was also copying a rare
record from a friend from 1975, it was the pressing that had less
bass than I would have expected for that particular type of reggae.
