OK, it's quiet again...
 

....so here's summat to amuse you - a 'ukra team effort'!!

I've been posting crappy open mic recordings made with a little lapel mic
here for some time now - so, by way of reward for being so polite about
them, here's a couple of tracks recorded with Nick's Behringer 'measurement'
mic from a 'test CD' that I have been recording clips from and sending to
Don for analysis. (This has been extremely useful to me and has prompted a
driver change which has improved the speakers no end and, dare I say it? -
has produced my best ever sound...!!?? ;-)

Anyways, they are 'dual mono' and are recorded *open mic* (so allow for the
*room effect* - and MP3ing) on my SET/Horns as follows:

Homebrew Lowther Fidelios with PM6C drivers

Keith, this last one looks clipped in several places. I'd guess your
300B amp hasn't enough power even with Lowthers. How do they sound with
something a bit more powerful, even staying with valves?

I can't go down that road again, Serge - I've heard that track far too many
times lately!

I think the clipping is in the recording proces, I can certainly play that
plenty loud over the system without any distortion!! My problem is that
everything *still* has to be on the floor or it clips in Sound Forge!!

Hardly. The Lowther range are rated at 100W nominal.

They can produce almost 100dB at 1m/1kHz/1watt of, so very low
power indeed will drive them hard enough to fill a largish room with
very good sound.

I was at a Lowther get-together a couple of weeks ago. The listening
room was 12 x 8 metres.

Sounds like the analogue input of your sound card is too sensitive. WHat
input are you using, mic or line? If line, are you using an external mic
amplifier? Can the gain of that device be turned down? What happens if
you use the card's mic input and the mic plugged straight in?

There should be a way of recording without all the controls at the
bottom of their travel.

I don't have a sound card as such, I a, using the motherboard sound.


WHat
input are you using, mic or line?


Line via the Tape Out on a little Pioneer ss amp.



If line, are you using an external mic
amplifier? Can the gain of that device be turned down?


It is - down to probably 10% of the 'knob's travel'...!!


What happens if
you use the card's mic input and the mic plugged straight in?

You would have thought so, but it's always been the case!! (On this computer
and the one before it!!) It is only curable by splicing a 'pot in a box'
into the loop, but I robbed that for the Alps pot and haven't got round to
replacing it yet!! :-)
