Cannot give polite comments on old Sansui speakers that only produced
distortion and only 150 pounds/pair, to replace them with right?

I have an ancient pair of humongous floor standing Sansui sp 7300
speakers which my father envies. He says that the quality compared to
his speakers at home is brilliant. He wants a replacement pair of proper
speakers , listens to classical and bras music, is a REAL musician (not
like me) and so has a good ear for sound.
What could I get him for his birthday that are in the £150 price range?
Would a trip to RicherSounds be useful?
Is it best to buy new on the basis that technology is always improving
the sound/product?
Certain things _may_ improve, mass produced items become cheaper as more
components are integrated into monlithic chips requiring greatly simplified
circuit boards and probably lower power consumption (for example). I'd be
interested to hear whether speakers themselves have actually improved. I've
not bought speakers for years and the low end ones I've heard recently have
had a particularly nasty sound when compared to bookshelf speakers of 10
years ago or more like the LS3/5a .
Modern extended bass systems such as surround sound systems produce ISTM a
monotonous one note bass which is very tiring compared to the bass produced
by a large tradtional speaker with a large cone.
Any polite thoughts welcome peeps.
We are close to 2007, so your not going to be able to find anything
with 1950 prices. Realistically One Fifty Pounds [ $450 ] is only going
to buy you a reasonable set of leads.
There is nothing IMO reasonable about a set of leads that costs either £150
or $450.
It comes down to you only get what you pay for. Sorry.
In which case it's not worth shopping around for anything as everything is
worth exactly what you pay for it.
