Since I find Wagner tedious I will use that time for other purposes.
There are those who like Wagner, and those who like music... I expect I'll
enjoy the music. ;-
Well if Wagner's not music then I guess Berio isn't either. However
did anyone else see the Berio TV broadcast and think it very strange?
The audio imaging and the video images were frequently very out of kilter
(at least for me):
- the vocal soloists' voices from my audio system were spread rather
wider than my TV screen: the close-ups of the left-hand soloist were
very strange when the sound of his voice was coming from half a metre
to the left of his image on the TV; my fault I suppose for not
listening through the TV's 'speakers;
- there were two distinct levels of ambience. The orchestral
ambience was clear and normal, but the mic'd soloists' voices seemed
to float disembodied from the rest in an ambience-free space (maybe
intentional?);
- one more example: a violin visual close-up but the violin sounding as
per the fixed more distant stereo perspective. In effect it seemed
like the violin was making no sound at all, despite the visible bowing,
since the level was just wrong.
Anyway it was another good concert (and I won't mention the excellent
Bernstein and Ives symphonies).
