Fitting a Project Debut III with Ortofon 2M Red cartridge
"Keith G" wrote in message ... "Fleetie" wrote in message ... After reading rave reviews of the 2M Red I am thinking of buying one. Its $120 here in Australia which is around my price range. Why has this group been taken over by a bunch of Aussies? You have your own newsgroup, aus.hi-fi, and you're literally on the other side of the planet, so, just, WHY? Because, deep down, all Aussies are still 'Brits at heart' - albeit descended from low-life, 'East End' criminal scum!! :-) It's not even like your message was cross-posted to both groups! You're in oz-land, yet you deliberately just posted to uk.rec.audio. WHY? Because there is no-one in the Land Of The Waller B who know a bloody thing about *audio*...!! ;-) Scrub all that - one of 'ems just lobbed a 500 quid bid on me Trio effem chooner!* (*Salt of the earth* those Aussies!! ;-) *Didn't get it though - looks like it's gone to someone who wants to collect, thank Gawd!! |

I am planning on moving up the ladder. After reading rave reviews of the 2M Red I am thinking of buying one. Its $120 here in Australia which is around my price range. The only concern I have is if my turntable and tonearm (project 8.6) will be handle this upgrade. Any tips? **You shouldn't experience any problems. I would only be concerned with the fitting of an MC cart to that arm. Why? **MC carts require either a significantly well damped arm, or one with extremely rigid arm tube and well constructed bearings. The one exception, IME, has been a carbon fibre arm, which appears to possess adequate internal damping. For the record: The venerable Rega RB300 is entirely suitable for MC (and MM) carts. Do you think I should find remarkable improvements in sound quality after this upgrade? I have heard the 3M red's have good bass response. **Since I've not heard either cart, I cannot comment. Have a little play with the VTA to see if it makes a difference: Play a suitable record on its own and then with another record underneath it and then with two underneath it (I think you'll find the spindle long enough) - see/hear what difference it makes, if any. Thanks Keith, will do... when I dig it out of the garage where it's been resting since being replaced. Even better is to get a friend to do the listening without seeing what you are doing.... My friends are like "you spent *that much ???* on a replacement, are you mad!!!". Happily the bass from the replacement deck, arm, cart and fuzzy felt thing on a glass platter is more than sufficient. Which is a relief because adjusting VTA on that is .... well, nah... let's not go there ;-( -- Adrian C |

Have you tried comparing with and without the felt? Here's a little wobblicam movie of the Manticore where, even allowing for the weedy digital camera recording (and the lightsome speakers I was using), you will perhaps be able to determine the lack of bass: This ****pile: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/myhifi/VicSponge.jpg is to bass |

The trick is not to let Trevor's *scary talk* put you off too much - I believe (but don't really *know*) that most modern, 'real world' carts are aimed pretty much at 'medium everything' these days and that it's unlikely you'll have trouble fitting a cart to almost any tonearm! Always ready to be *put right*, of course... |
