Fitting a Project Debut III with Ortofon 2M Red cartridge

Hi guys,

I have had my adorable Project Debug III fitted with the Ortofon OM
5E. I am planning on moving up the ladder.

After reading rave reviews of the 2M Red I am thinking of buying one.
Its $120 here in Australia which is around my price range.

The only concern I have is if my turntable and tonearm (project 8.6)
will be handle this upgrade.

Any tips?

Cheers Max

**You shouldn't experience any problems. I would only be concerned with the
fitting of an MC cart to that arm.

Thanks Trev. Your suggestion are spot on as usual.

Do you think I should find remarkable improvements in sound quality
after this upgrade? I have heard the 3M red's have good bass
response.

Regards

Max

I once had an Ortofon OM 5E on a earlier Project Debut II lacking quite
a bit of bass. Don't think it's a good cartridge - can't understand why
1) it's standard supply with that deck & 2) why reviewers back then
raved on so much about the performance of the cartridge / tonearm setup?

Have a little play with the VTA to see if it makes a difference: Play a
suitable record on its own and then with another record underneath it
and then with two underneath it (I think you'll find the spindle long
enough) - see/hear what difference it makes, if any.

Even better is to get a friend to do the listening without seeing what
you are doing....

Why has this group been taken over by a bunch of Aussies? You have your
own newsgroup, aus.hi-fi, and you're literally on the other side of the
planet, so, just, WHY?

It's not even like your message was cross-posted to both groups! You're
in oz-land, yet you deliberately just posted to uk.rec.audio. WHY?

You're not necessarily unwelcome; I am just genuinely confused about the
recent huge influx of aussies here.

The only concern I have is if my turntable and tonearm (project 8.6)

My 'tip' of choice is that of the Sumiko Blue Point Special Evo III. Sounds
verrry nice. But it's "nude" with all the ultra-thin coil wiring very exposed
and one false move and it's 250 GBP down the toilet. I'm on my third for that
reason. Oops.

Possibly the fumble factor and risk of damage fitting one to a 'fixed'
tonearm with no removable headshell?

Athough any decent MC cart will have a stylus protector which will
enable the cart to be fitted with it in-situ and removed afterwards - I
have AT, Ortofon and Goldring MC carts, all of which allow this...

Because, deep down, all Aussies are still 'Brits at heart' - albeit
descended from low-life, 'East End' criminal scum!! :-)

Because there is no-one in the Land Of The Waller B who know a bloody
thing about *audio*...!! ;-)

Think yourself lucky (by comparison) - we're getting Poles and Rumanians
here, now....

It's for all those pearls of wisdom that cannot be found anywhere else --
you know, like all CD players costing more than 1.75 GBP sound alike, all
cables sound alike, etc., etc.
