There are many good E.European stations, especially if you
are interested in classical music. The Czech station Radio Prague,
and also transmissions from Radio Budapest, Hungary , Kiev in the
Ukraine are well worth listening to.

They beat "East Enders" any day:-)

You listen to 'East Enders' on the radio?

Is there another way? All my telly comes by radio.

And why not - best sci-fi ever 'saw' was 'Jet Morgan: Journey Into Space'
when I wuz a kid, sitting on the arm of an armchair, feet dangling, staring
at the grille cloth of a old (even then) radio probably less than 3 feet
away!

That was scary as hell! I remember it well. Listened to it recently on
BBC7 and it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered though. Operation
Luna was definitely the best of the series.

I've got the whole thing saved to hard disk somewhere, but I haven't been
able to get round to playing it - tbh, I have a little trouble taking Alfie
Bass too seriously!

Time passes, things change...

Operation
Luna was definitely the best of the series.

ISTR one episode was acted in 'complete darkness' and I remember that one to
be particularly scary!! By way of a contrast, we watched 'Sunshine' (2007)
the other evening and for all its 'techno' and the lofty concept of a
'poisened sun/end of all life on Earth' it was less scary (and a good deal
more boring) than the average episode of Shaun The Sheep!

Time changes, things pass...

Indeed. However, it *had* no competition from TV in my youth - it hadn't
arrived in the NE of Scotland when JIS started.

But it did soon afterwards - and I was very disappointed to see the actors
from JIS in the flesh on it (playing other parts) - they looked nothing
like they should have done. ;-)

Streuth, we agree on something!

I couldn't agree more - I transposed the faces of Dan Dare and Digby from
the Eagle to JIS (at least, I think I did) and the actors were simply
*wrong*. Same for the Archers (not a fan, but the fire in the stables was
very and never been surpassed, IMO) - when I saw a photo of the cast once,
they looked nothing like!

Nowadays (although it's been a long time since I listened to a radio play) I
find I 'fit' the characters with the 'nearest actor' in the case of
'unknowns' - which is another way TV craps up radio!

(Didn't Jet Morgan become a Scottish MP...??)

I'm tempted to say all my radio comes by telly actually. But I'd be
fibbing slightly.

Didn't David Kossof also play Lemmie...?

Good grief. You go on about crap TV - and now how good JIS was - but don't
listen to current drama on the radio? And you're often at home in the
afternoon? Try it. There's some superb stuff there.

I find I 'fit' the characters with the 'nearest actor' in the
case of 'unknowns' - which is another way TV craps up radio!

Not always these days. I've a feeling that radio casting sometimes takes
into account the looks of the actor - as chances are many will know that
from TV.

Andrew Faulds, Guy Kingsley Pointer and David Kossof were the originals,
IIRC.

Radio, TV, video, films, books, lectures, concerts etc
etc all compete for our leasure time. I would rather
to listen to a concert from Kiev than watch a second
rate TV show.
