It's official - LPs are on the up again!

scribeth thus "Keith G" wrote I don't give a rat's what levels they achieve with modern 'music replay' technology in the future - *nothing* will ever shift the humble LP from my No. 1 slot! :-) OK, not strictly true - I meant 'chosen music replay' - I actually listen to more radio than anything else, as I have it on all day long and very often listen into the wee small hours when some of the most sublime stuff is on. (Hence posts here at silly o' clock, sometimes!) I don't know how it happens, but Classic FM usually goes very good indeed in the evenings while Radio 3 is getting far too good at broadcasting a 'Cello Masterclass' or some such *talky* thing just when you don't need it! Yes Classic FM has its moments but is processed to death and as you say Radio 3 is too much rabbit.. What's needed is a Radio Three and a half which they could put on digital assuming that we had a good digital radio system... -- Tony Sayer |

... Yes Classic FM has its moments but is processed to death and as you say Radio 3 is too much rabbit.. I can't stand Classic FM. Not only is it processed to death as you say, but it also interrupts the music far too often for those indescribably awful adverts (why are radio adverts so much more irritating than TV ones?). But I also agree that there is far too much rabbit on R3, particularly in the evenings. What's needed is a Radio Three and a half which they could put on digital assuming that we had a good digital radio system... Or change Radio 3 into a proper classical music station and put the rabbit on a new digital-only station? David. |

Well, why not sign up to the Friends of Radio 3 at http://www.for3.org/ They have had some success in reducing the rabbit and other tendencies (my hates would include foreign pop (AKA world) music. Its peak audience will be during the day - and much of the rabbit would be cheap to make, compared to the cost of playing most music. More magical properties from Kitty. It would be some speaker which could un-compress an over compressed signal. Of course if they have a poor top end like most 'full range' drivers it might go some way to taming that. -- *The sooner you fall behind, the more time you'll have to catch up * Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

The point of the centre speaker is to lock dialogue to the screen centre even for members of the audience who are well away from the sweet spot. Problem is that speech frequencies are the most critical to the ear so require a very good match for the third speaker. And most designed for this job - ie to fit underneath the screen etc - are more often made to withstand a thrashing. I bought a very expensive KEF centre speaker which was hopeless as a match. But now use it as a foldback speaker on pro stuff where a small - but *very* loud source is needed. ;-) -- *The most common name in the world is Mohammed * Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

Which is why in professional use the centre speaker will usually be identical to the L & R ones. And as we agree for domestic use a phantom centre is usually preferable. David. |
