It's official - LPs are on the up again!
Well OK, that's what my mate SN says on the basis that he bumped into a
friend buying vinyl in a charity shop at the same he (SN) was buying vinyl in the same charity shop! :-) Actually, he does say that more people are mentioning it in the shop lately and buying needles - which they apparently do rather a lot of! (There was summat else interesting/relevant he said that I would have mentioned here, but it's gone now!) Anyway, he brung me a bag of odds and sods: James Last, Latin Brass, Stereo Samplers &c. - almost all virtually *unplayed* the other night when he returned my spare Lenco deck, which I had replinthed in a kitchen worktop sample: http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/LencoLast.jpg Earlier this evening, I slung it down unchecked/unexamined, hooked it up to me new (but *slated*, apparently) Denon SS amp's 'Phono In' and popped a record on..... Wah! Bliss! (Even with a poop Goldring G800 and the record dragging against the curtain - see pic!) I don't give a rat's what levels they achieve with modern 'music replay' technology in the future - *nothing* will ever shift the humble LP from my No. 1 slot! :-) |

Most CD's issued on vinyl seem to become double albums, with a gatefold sleeve, additional pictures and information which is either omitted from the CD booklet or printed too small to be read without the aid of a microscope. For classical music, the capacity of the CD is ideal. But for the majority of pop/chart recordings, *far* too long. Hence the need to include "remixes", fillers and alternative versions ad infinitum. A 20-30 minute listening stint to this kind of music is enough, as the artistic quality of the titles depreciates with the running order. They have their place, but at the current state of the art, if the recording is done correctly, cds etc, are better than vinyl. Yes indeed. There is no question about that. Unfortunately, the wheel has turned too far to be able to go back to fidelity mastering in some genres of CD production. Iain |

Of course. It just seems like that:-) But even nostaligia is not what it used to be. And now I know I can do something useful with my stack of 78s.... Tha might not be prudent. Good collectable shellacs go for several hundred pounds a piece. A pal of mine has an unplayed 78rpm of Elvis Presley, "All Shook Up" It has its original sealing sticker, in a brown paper cover "Alphonse Carey - Records, Sheet Music and fine Pianos - Newbury. CDs go on far too long, which is why CD players have remote controls - so it's possible to zip through one in about 10/12 minutes without keep getting up! :-) They have their place, but at the current state of the art, if the recording is done correctly, cds etc, are better than vinyl. (Hence posts here at silly o' clock, sometimes!) I don't know how it happens, but Classic FM usually goes very good indeed in the evenings while Radio 3 is getting far too good at broadcasting a 'Cello Masterclass' or some such *talky* thing just when you don't need it! |
