Michael Chare asked on here a few weeks ago about whether it was
possible to receive the BBC's AAC Internet radio streams on any
Wi-Fi-Internet radio devices, so I thought some of you might be
interested to know they are now available on the Squeezebox if you
install the Squeezebox's iPlayer plug-in.

Some of the streams have been verified as being e.g. 128 kbps AAC
where appropriate, so I think it's pretty certain that they're the
same streams that are available via the iPlayer website (I'm certainly
not aware of the BBC launching any non-Flash-based AAC radio streams).

I'm totally confused really. When I spoke to an I player guy at the BBC to
find out why the Iplayer was made with flash which is very hard to use for
blind users, he said in fact the stram was windows media, and the container
for the controls was flash.

I begin to wonder if these people are just bull****ting to get rid of
questions that are beyond their scope.

When did your "iPlayer guy" say that? Perhaps it was before they'd changed

Then he didn't know what he was talking about, because the iPlayer
radio streams have been using AAC since June/July, and the AAC streams
were being tested from about February.

Yes, that works quite well for me.

However much I like my Squeezebox system, it's admittedly overkill just
for an internet radio. Better off with a cheaper second-hand laptop and
a decent sound 'card'.

Thank you. In the meantime I have found the Dutch Avro internet stations
which use 256kbps MP3 format.

It's a pity more internet radio stations don't offer this quality, most of
them appear to have the same attitude to quality as UK Dab radio stations.

If the BBC can launch the iPlayer on Freesat receivers, which I am probably
will not be able to receive because of the limited of my broadband
connection,
they could increase the bandwidth of their internet radio stations which I
can receive.
