And it looks 'nice' compared to a proper FM aerial. So much neater. That's
what I was told. ;-)

If the 'burble' you reported is reduced by using narrow IF then a better
antenna may well improve the situation so you can use a wider IF with no
burbling and get lower distortion.

Afraid the aerial choice is out of my hands as I'm in sheltered
accommodation, though I might try and persuade the Council that what we
need here is a rotator and one of these...
http://ronsmithaerials.com/catalog/G23.html
that would definitely sort it out.

I've had a couple of days to twiddle things and now it's found a
permanent location I've made up some very short fly leads from double
shielded cable as per... http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/tvplugs.htm
and all is peace.

I was hoping the Denon would pull in a few more stations, but it has
exceeded expectations, on the receiver I could get 12 stations more or
less perfectly, this has jumped to 20 plus a couple of local community
stations which were just noise before.

If I settle for slightly noisy stereo I can get umpteen from as far as
Crystal Palace 80 Km away. Choice FM on 90.50 is very strong here for
some reason

In mono the world is my oyster, Tacolneston 120km, Holme Moss 140km,
and Wrotham 145km so far, I've got a new hobby, FM DX'ing yo!.

MW and LW are impressive as well.

Long distance AM listening may not be Hi-Fi but it is hugely enjoyable.
Scanning through the bands you may come upon a delightful performance
of an enchanting piece and listen intently, interference, noise and any
thoughts of the mechanics of how it reached you banished. You will
probably never know what it was,who the performer is, or where this
gift of the airways came from and will never hear it again. But for a
few minutes, you experience your own world premier and the only
performance and listen entranced.

This just has to be the best 20 audio pounds I've ever spent, unlike a
Yamaha CT-700 or 800 in 1978 which cost a relative fortune and only
lasted a few months before being traded in as part payment on a motor
bike. A Suzuki X7, if you're reading Keith.

You might do better with your own FM aerial in the loft than the crappy
communal one. FM DAs are often not brilliant.

I'd regard something like that as being likely to be a waste of cash. I'd
suggest a simple 3 or 4 element. Chances are that will work about as well,
and be more durable. The key is the pointing since you want to sit any
interfering TX giving you 'burbles' on a dip in the antenna pattern if you
can as well having the preferred TX near on-axis.

FWIW You might even find that two dipoles in the room with a combiner will
do a decent job if the main problem is interference. The snag is that
experimenting with where to place and align them will be a nightmare! 8-]

If you mean a CT7000 not 700 then I am surprised you parted with it so
quickly! They are very good. (I still have one.) Their main practical
problem is all the expletive internal connectors which start to go
intermittent after a decade or more. Apart from that, as Angus McK found,
their only real design flaw was that the balance of RF/IF noise
contributions isn't ideal.

But then I've never understood the fondness many people have for sets of
wheels. :-)

Slainte,

Jim

Faboloso!

Lovely little bike that I wouldn't say 'no' to today - a scally's bike
dressed up in nice, respectable commuter clothing from the Golden Age that
could/would go like a scalded cat, but could never quite outrun its own
'vapour trails'!! :-)

See them on You Tube; start here if you can stand the soundtrack:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmQsHp7lty4

Yamaha CT-700?

I had a pristine copy of the much-vaunted Trio/Kenwood KT917 a little while
back:

http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/showntell/KT917.JPG

Very nice but frankly not miles ahead of my little Technics FM tuner and it
(the Trio) used to run so damned hot it bothered me - which is saying summat
for a 'valvey' type!

Sold it in a heartbeat for a good chunk but, IIRC, not on eBay...???
