I'm not happy at using a change in format as the way to make this
communication, especially if that leaves CD as the "junk" format
destined
to carry all the over-compressed rubbish. CD is a good format, I don't
want to see it thrown away that way.

CD is not a good format other than as a disposable one-time 'carrier';

Hardly "one-time", CD is a robust medium.

I think it had its uses, and now its time is up. 'One-time' means write
once, not read.

I find it more than curious that some vinyl fans are so keen to dismiss the
CD as "obsolete". As though the CD is the "enemy" which has to be got rid of
as quickly as possible, even though the "replacements" of the CD are also
digital. Oh, and I don't think Keith meant what you say he did by "one-time
'carrier".

it has been superceded by mass storage of 'virtual music' on hard disks
and soon, when the prices drop, large SS storage devices

Mass storage is useless for selling and transporting and individual
albums.

Ha! Have a look at 'iTunes'. Where do you think that music is kept, sold
from and stored to?

And how do you think it gets onto the iTunes servers? by ripping from CDs
that's how.

Even the players are been rendered obsolete by the minute playback
devices
available today.

You mean like turntables were 25 years ago?

Funny you should say that. Turntables and records, are, in fact still
produced.

You missed the point. CD players are only as obsolete now as turntables
were 25 years ago.

Yes, it has an oddness. Fact remains though, however uncomfortable that
makes you feel.

The complaint is often made that all CD players sound alike, that's because
they don't sound of anything. A good analogy is that all plate-glass windows
look alike. You can't see a plate-glass window because all you can see is
what's on the other side, you can't hear a CD player because all you can
hear is the recording. If vinyl sounds "better" to you it's because you
*can* hear, and like, the distortions that that medium adds to the sound,
just as some might prefer the "look" of a medieval window. If you prefer it
fine, but don't fool yourself that you are aren't expressing a preference
for distortion.

/snip remainder of stuck-in-80s stuff/

Better than being stuck in the '70s :-)

David.

That sounds a little paranoid. Why do CD bigots automatically see
*opposition* between CDs and vinyl? You are aware that many (probably most)
vinyl enthusiasts also play and probably enjoy CDs...??

(As I have said before, even *I* have several hundred of the bloody things
lying about, here and there!! :-)

Oh, and I don't think Keith meant what you say he did by "one-time

You are correct - I was meaning that a CD is a fine way to get the music
home (via the CI, naturally) when you would naturally rip it into your music
store. I gather the thing is to buy the things cheap on eBay, rip them to
hard disk and/or copy them then punt them back out on eBay. It's a cheap way
of building up a library.

I have 18,657 music tracks (mostly 256K) in 2,305 'folders' on hard disk -
almost all ripped from CD into Sound Forge, where you get to *see* the
compression! Absolute waste of time and effort - I have no need of 'music on
the go' and they only get used for the occasional 'name that tune' games
here!

My main source of music, I hafta say, is the radio - in terms of time spent
listening!

What do you mean by "mostly 256k"? That you've converted them into 256knps
mp3?

Again, what do you mean? Are you muddling up data compression with level
compression?

Why have you produced all these "tracks" if you have no interest in using
them?

It may well be a waste of time my asking, but your statements did seem
muddled so I wondered what on Earth you meant by them. With luck I may even
spot your reply when it pops up in a new thread because you can't either
fix your news software or change to something that works decently. :-)

Slainte,

Jim

Of course - what else could it mean?

Sound Forge is the software I use to rip CDs.

where you get to *see* the compression!

No. When you rip a CD with Sound Forge you get to see the waveform for each
track where you can see how 'crushed' (or not) it can be. The data
compression (or not) doesn't occur until you save the ripped data as one of
a number of types of file - see:

Good question. For a while my 'music visitors' here used to bring a handful
of CDs and I would rip them during the course of the evening - it takes a
while to rip a disk but you don't need to be in constant attendance.

How about *can't be arsed* to swap software or try to fix something which I
suspect is out of my hands?

This reply should append to your own post but don't worry, it's no problem
to me if you don't find it.
