Do you have children? Do you take them to the park to play football?
What does a professional coach earn per hour? You should charge them -
deduct it from their pocket money. I'm glad I don't have to live in
your private hell.

Prefer your own little hell do you? Now there's a surprise.

I do see my time as 'valuable' in the sense that I have to choose between
various things I wish to do, or have some reason to do. However...

This morning I spent half an hour making some cranberry sauce for tomorrow.
Of course, if I was thinking I had to 'charge myself' the rates I used to
get at times for some work this would have 'cost' me vastly more than
buying a jar in M&S.

But I enjoyed making it, and the recipy I use includes port, orange juice
and zest, cinnamon stick, stem ginger, and cloves. We think it tastes nicer
than shop cranberry sauce. So it seems daft to apply a "time equals money"
to everything you do. We don't live to work, even if we have to spend some
of our time working to live.

And I didn't actually charge myself.

My oldest brother once said to me, "You spend a lot of your life working,
so, if you can, choose work you enjoy doing. That is worth far more than
money." I found that good advice. Maybe I could have piled up more money by
doing other jobs, and putting in more hours. But I chose not to. I guess I
was fortunate, though, in that my interests and skills turned out to be in
things like engineering which I could use to get jobs I liked and paid
enough to keep me happy - and gave me some 'free' time to do as I chose.

Have a really Happy Christmas,

Jim

Very very good advice. What a pity so many people don't have that wisdom
when they are young and looking for a job.

Sadly the chance of being able to choose a job you enjoy gets more remote
by the year.

Sooner or later you were bound to say something I agree with.

Alas, that does seem the trend in recent years.

I found that being happy to learn and keep an eye out for unexpected
opportunities helped. But I was lucky, I think. Being adaptable and willing
to learn/work isn't much use when there are no jobs, or the ones around pay
almost nothing. Thus making it impossible to choose one that is both
interesting and gives time for other things.

Better not give my opinion of the "Neoclassical economics" faith system.
Not the place, and my views might seem out of keeping with a season of
goodwill! If people want to know, read Galbraith or even Keen. Or just
look around you. By their works, ye shall know them. :-/

Happy Christmas,

Jim

Wish I'd met your bro years ago .. I made ****-loads of money for a
while, but missed, amongst other stuff, my kids growing up 'cos I lived
in hotels most of the week and many weekends too.

Now I'm a school caretaker(Site supervisor!) on less than £17k a year
and love it ..

Have a really Happy Christmas,

Same to you, and your brother!

So what do you think of Newt Gingrich's suggestion that school janitors
should be fired and replaced by demotivated school students from
impoverished families?

Good luck to 'em .. our eldest student is 8, it's a primary school.

We are an Ofsted outstanding school that has recently had a letter
saying we won't be needing any further Ofsted visits whilst standards
are at least maintained. We're still increasing standards ..

Whilst I am in a union at present, I won't be (probably) after January,
or when I cba get round to it.

Besides, he's American, what does he know about, and how would it apply
to our educational system?

What do you think about it?
