wasn't aware I had a sig, and the post looks OK as it arrived in my
inbox - did I do something wrong?

The earlier posting you replied to had a sig. This is separated from the
body text by a line containing just dashdashspace

If you see '-- ' in an email or news posting it there to tell RFC compliant
software that what follows is a sig, and can (the presumption is, should)
be excluded from quoting when replying.

Your comments were written below that sig seperator, so became part of the
sig. Email/News software that correctly understands the RFCs for sigs tends
to snip the sig when you respond. So your comments are then omitted when
someone wants to reply to them!
