The Lidl USB microscope I've got does x20, x40, x350. I'll have a go at
using it for stylus inspection.

Anyone say if this works with Linux? (Or RISC OS?)

Dunno. It's USB and I've found RISC OS support for that so shaky I never
use it on the RPCs.

It does seem to use a standard USB camera driver. I have another - one of
those inspection cameras - and the software for both seems fairly
interchangeable in terms of seeing a pic on the screen. So I'd look for
perhaps USB webcam stuff?

2) Microscope. Mainly for things like examining a LP replay stylus.

Did anyone manage to examine a stylus and actually see the wear pattern?

Michael Fremer has published pictures of stylus wear on several
occasions in Stereophile. He uses a USB microscope. Look at:

The closest I've got to that in the past is images big enough to show
blackening of the regions near the tip-end of the stylus. But I'd be
interested in being able to see more detail.

So that's a *NO* then.

Actually it is "yes". He has published several pictures showing wear
on a stylus via the USB microscope.

All things considered, not bad results for a small outlay.

Then why don't you post a link to a decent image rather than a search query?

Very simple: This gives multiple results and the single image is
exactly that: just one instance.

So you can't find a single decent image....
