It sounds like he's missing the nuts.

Lots of old speakers have these binding posts so you could get some from
another pair of speakers or simply find a nut that fits.

Many thanks for the replies guys...I see now!...yes the nuts are missing but no problem,I was thinking it was some sort of special connector!....thanks again all.P.
